The Importance of Battery for Sustainable Energy

One of the critical problems in renewable energies is energy storage. It is also become a challenging issue with data storage, according to the Homo Deus book written by Yuval Noah Harari. Because renewable power might not be produced at the time when most needed. The creation of energy from such sources depends on environmental conditions. Like wind energy is harnessed when it is windy, and solar energy creation is dependent on sunlight. The existence of battery or energy storage will provide us sustainable electricity resources in any condition. When connected to a renewable energy source, such as photovoltaic solar panels, the battery can take in the clean energy produced when the skies are clear and sunny, store it, and send it back to the electricity grid at night, on cloudy days, or whenever needed.

Why battery becomes potential? Because the cost of lithium-ion battery production continues to fall. As believed by Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla), the lithium-ion battery costs will fall to 100 USD/KWh by 2021. It is down from a price of 1000 USD within a decade. On the report of Bloomberg projects, battery storage costs to drop below 50 USD by 2030. By this condition, alternative energy sources will become increasingly competitive with conventional ones. Within 2025, we can expect battery storage to be an integrated and essential component of all renewable energy projects. Battery storage offers a viable solution for keeping intermittent energy supplies in which associated with renewable energy. Besides, the cost is lowering as production increases and it provides hope for the future that is tied to clean renewable energy.
