Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) Processing

Nickel is important metal needed as a fundamental component in Ni-rich NMC cathode active material for Li-ion Batteries. One of nickel sources in nature is laterite ores which is a low-grade nickel ore type. This low-grade nickel ore is generally just left as a by-product without further processing.

Center for Mineral Resources Development Technology - Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (PPTSM-BPPT) has attempted to process lateritic ore through atmospheric leaching. The leaching process can dissolve nickel, iron, cobalt, aluminum, etc. from other impurities. Basic chemicals are added to the leachate product to reach proper pH value to precipitate iron. The solid precipitate was then filtered from the leachate solution to remove the iron. The last process is the precipitation of remaining metals which mainly is nickel and cobalt using hydroxide compounds to produce Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP).
