Indonesian Solar PV Penetration to the Grid

The main issue of Solar PV installation is the grid connection system. There are two types of solar PV systems, the on-grid system and the off-grid system. The on-grid system send excess power generated to the utility grid when the PV overproducing. The off-grid system will store and save the solar power in battery storage for use when the power grid goes down. This issue also cover up on PLN’s Focus Group Discussion about Conversion Program from Diesel Power Plant (PLTD) to Solar Power Plant (PLTS) and Battery on May 10th 2021.

There are several policy to boost Indonesian solar PV Penetration to the grid. Such as Decree of PLN directors No. 0357.K/DIR/2014 "Pedoman Penyambungan Pembangkit Listrik Energi Terbarukan ke Sistem Distribusi PLN", ministerial regulation ESDM No. 12/2017, and ministerial regulation ESDM No. 10/2017. Also, there are two kinds of solar PV characteristic, intermittent (energy depends on solar irradiation) and non dispatchable (hourly, energy can't be predicted). For penetrating to the grid, according to PT. Len Industry, there are two strategies; spinning reverse system (maximum 10-20% from minimum power of day time) and depends on short circuit level at point of interconnection. Furthermore, the implementation challenge in Indonesia lays on Manual dispatching and grid code covered local area.
